No Child . . . Comes to Hangar
JANUARY 30, 2008 (ITHACA, NY) -- The Hangar Theatre announces an exciting change to the 2008 Mainstage season. The Theatre has landed the rights to the critically-acclaimed hit play No Child… by gifted actor and playwright Nilaja Sun. No Child… will replace Rough Crossing as the third show of the 2008 Mainstage Season.
Hangar Executive Director Lisa Bushlow said, “we are absolutely thrilled to be able to present this timely, relevant, and entertaining play, especially given the Hangar’s active program in arts education throughout the county.”
Insightful and moving, this groundbreaking work is the result of Sun’s experience as a teaching artist in one of New York City’s toughest inner city schools and paints a humorous but unflinching picture of what education looks like in low income districts where chipped paint, security guards, metal detectors, and weapon-bearing police are the norm. It is into this environment that a young African-American actor, behind in rent, accepts a job directing tenth-grade academically- and emotionally-challenged students in a play about life in prison. Heartbreaking, provocative, and funny, No Child... will run for two weeks, from July 9 through July 19.
This change also allows the Hangar to offer a special engagement of the romantic comedy Bad Dates which will overlap with No Child…, running July 16 through July 26. Both shows will be directed by the Hangar’s Associate Artistic Director, Wendy Dann.
Subscription packages for the Hangar Theatre’s 2008 Mainstage Season are now available at the Hangar Business Office, 116 N. Cayuga Street, Ithaca or by calling (607) 273-8588. For more information, please visit hangartheatre.org.
