MAINSTAGE

Gypsy

July 4 until July 20, 2013
at Hangar Theatre

Book by Arthur Laurents, Music by Jule Styne, Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

Directed by Stephanie Yankwitt

"Celebrated singers from Ethel Merman to Bernadette Peters have defined and redefined the complex role of Mama Rose. But the moment Broadway performer Michele Ragusa begins to sing, you forget everything you've heard, immersed in the present.
- Barbara Adams, Ithaca Journal

"The Hangar's production hits the heights with its juicy combo of singing, acting and star power." "Michele Ragusa sizzles as Rose, except when she smolders." "She acts the hell out of the role while pouring a rich, trumpeting mezzo (with rich alto bloom and a iridescent soprano top) into the sharp Sondheim lyrics and bouncy Styne music." "With star turns, great singing and acting, an incredibly tight ensemble, sharp design, and a toe-tapping onstage band, there's no doubt that everything will be coming up roses at the Hangar this July."
- Ross Haarstad, Ithaca Times

"Michele Ragusa delivers a 'Rose's Turn' that is a kaleidoscope of emotions ...
no performer in these parts has ever given it quite this plangent cry from the heart."
- James MacKillop, Syracuse New Times

"The show is one of the greatest, most complex American musicals. It calls for a big, versatile cast, and Hangar floods the stage with talented performers." "Ragusa is superbly skilled at giving a song shape and focus."

- Neil Novelli, Syracuse Post Standard

One of the greatest American musicals of all time, Gypsy has claimed numerous awards and multiple Broadway revivals. Inspired by the memoirs of the legendary burlesque performer Gypsy Rose Lee, this gripping story follows the ultimate stage mother, determined to catapult her daughters to stardom in the waning 1920s vaudeville circuit. It's filled with Styne and Sondheim's popular standards, including "Everything's Coming up Roses", "Small World", "Let Me Entertain You", "All I Need Is the Girl", and "Rose's Turn".

Starring Broadway's Michele Ragusa (Young Frankenstein, Urinetown, Titanic) as Mama Rose. Wally Dunn (Spamalot, Gypsy) as Uncle Jocko; Martin Van Treuren (How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Jekyll and Hyde) as Pops; and Cathy Trien (Broadway revival of Gypsy and The Great American Trailer Park Musical) as Mazeppa.
