The Hangar Internship Program

The Hangar Internship Program offers you the opportunity to work alongside professional artists and managers at the forefront of an award-winning regional not-for-profit theatre in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of upstate New York.

Internships at the Hangar Theatre are designed to give creative and ambitious individuals who are interested in theatre the opportunity to work directly with professional theatre artists and administrators, and the opportunity for students to bridge the gap between collegiate work and professional life. The goals of our Internship Program are to offer students and aspiring theatre professionals experiential learning and insight into a career path, facilitate opportunities to make professional contacts, and equip individuals with marketable skills for jobs and graduate programs in theatre and not-for-profit management. 

The Hangar Theatre offers various internships in Production, Artistic and Administration. Interns work directly with individual department heads & staff to receive practical training in administrative management or technical theatre. Intern applicants must be 18 years of age. Many Hangar alumni have gone on to work professionally at nationally and internationally renowned theatre institutions including Alliance Theatre, American Repertory Theatre, Arizona Theatre Company, CENTERSTAGE, Children’s Theatre Company, Geva Theatre, Hartford Stage, Merrimack Repertory Theatre, Missouri Repertory Theatre, Oregon Shakespeare Theatre, Portland Stage Company, Signature Theatre, Syracuse Stage Company, and Woolly Mammoth Theatre among others. Internship opportunities are most often offered over the summer, but some positions are available during the fall and spring. Internships may qualify for college credit and/or federal work-study programs during the academic year.

Hangar Interns receive:

• Complimentary tickets to all Hangar productions during the season you are with us, and the chance to take advantage of free or discounted tickets to other Ithaca theaters through industry courtesy exchanges.
• Tickets to all Hangar opening night performances—including the post-show receptions.
• College credit, as arranged with your individual college or university.

COMMITMENT

What you need to know...

• Designed for college students, recent graduates and emerging professionals. Must be 18 years of age to apply.
• Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
• For college students, hours are flexible during the Fall, Winter and Spring to accommodate class schedules. Summer hours depend on the specifics of the position
• A modest stipend and/or housing is available for some positions, although most intern positions are unpaid. Stipend and housing benefits for internship positions are determined for each position within each department, and will be addressed during the interview process.

Artistic Department Internships:

Artistic Internship

Candidate should be interested in working in a fast-paced environment where initiative and creativity are highly valued.  Good organizational skills and computer proficiency are required. This position is unpaid and would require a commitment of 20 hours per week. Intern will report to the Artistic Director. 

Duties may include:

• Attending staff meetings and giving reports
• Attending art staff meetings and taking minutes
• Attending Artistic Advisory Committee meetings and taking minutes
• Assisting the Artistic Director and the Associate Artistic Director in the producing of the    Mainstage and KIDDSTUFF productions
• Providing research, material and management for promotional ventures in conjunction with the Marketing Department
• Facilitating communication between departments

Education Internship

Candidates should be interested in working with children on theater-based projects and assisting in the creation and management of those projects. Good organizational skills and computer proficiency are required. This position is unpaid and would require a commitment of 20 hours per week. Intern will report to Associate Artistic Director/Head of Education. 

Duties may include:

• Attending staff meetings and giving reports
• Attending Education Committee meetings and taking minutes
• Assisting in the registration for the Next Generation School of Theatre
• Assisting in the management of the Next Generation School of Theatre
• Assisting in the creation of curriculum for both school-based and theater training programs
• Communicating with parents and other stake holders in the theater’s education programs
• Assisting with other educational programming around the Mainstage productions (pre- and post- show talkbacks, etc)
• Assisting in the creation of supplementary educational materials (study guides and family guides)

Literary Internship

Candidates should be interested in the creation, development, and management of new plays & musicals.  Strong communication needed for work with playwrights, literary agents, and volunteer readers. Good organizational skills and computer proficiency are required. This position is unpaid and would require a commitment of 20 hours per week. This position will also require a commitment to read and present coverage of two new plays per week.  Intern will report to the Artistic Associate. 

Duties may include:

• Attending weekly artistic staff meetings
• Assisting the Literary Associate in the logging and filing of submitted plays-Reading and providing written coverage for submitted plays
• Communication with Board and Staff Members who are also reading submission
• Communicating with playwrights who have submitted materials for consideration
• Working in conjunction with the theatre’s development department to secure National funding for new play development
• Assisting in the facilitation of the monthly Hangar Pilot Reading Series over the summer and into the fall

Administration Department Internships:

Marketing and Communications Internship

Hangar Theatre is seeking marketing and communications interns for Summer 2013. Build your resume and come get hands on experience marketing and promoting a professional regional theatre! Interns work directly with the Director of Marketing and Communications.

General responsibilities:

Assisting the Marketing Director in implementing and/or developing a marketing and publicity plan which may include research, events postings, material distribution and production, social media management, writing and proofing, outreach, archiving, and more. 

Excellent writing and communication skills and computer proficiency are required.  Graphic design experience preferred. 

Group Sales and Subscriber Services Internship

This position is mentored by both the Hangar Theatre Marketing Director and the Audience Services/Group Sales Manager. Candidate should possess professional written and verbal communication skills, excellent research and organization skills and a strong interest in Arts Administration and Marketing. Some graphic design experience is a plus. This position requires proficiency in Excel, Word, and basic office software.  

General responsibilities: 

• Assist Audience Services Manager and Marketing Director in design and distribution of marketing materials for group sales and subscription sales
• Subscriber communications, including phone, in person, e-mail and postal mailings- Facilitating subscriber seating requests
• Facilitating internal VIP ticket reservations
• Data collection, organization and entry for group sales and subscriber services

Development Internship

Candidates should have excellent communication skills, excellent attention to detail and high level organizational skills. This position will report to our Development Associate.

• Assist Development Department in fund-raising and stewardship activities 
• Track donor and prospect data in the foremost donor database software-Raiser's Edge (training provided) 
• Donor correspondence
• Preparation of financial reports
• Special event planning and support
• Raffle or other short-term fund-raising program management
• Prospect and foundation research
• Writing and proofreading of proposals, correspondence, reports

Front of House Internship

Successful candidates will be articulate, detail-oriented individuals with initiative and strong customer service skills. This is a full time summer position that reports to the Audience Services Manager. This position will receive a weekly stipend.

• Training of ushers
• Assisting patrons with special needs
• Maintaining supply of programs at the theatre
• Seating issues
• Assisting Box Office personnel with Will Call
• Counting ticket stubs and issuing daily house reports
• Set up, break down and staffing of opening night receptions.

The Front of House Intern assists with all Mainstage and KIDDSTUFF performances throughout the season, and will be provided the opportunity to serve as House Manager for select KIDDSTUFF performances throughout the season. 

Company Management Internship

Applicants should have the ability to work effectively with many personality types. The ideal candidates will also possess excellent time management skills and will be highly organized. Most importantly, all candidates should have creative problem solving skills, the ability to multi-task under pressure, and an interest in hospitality and customer service. This position reports to the Company Manager.

General responsibilities:

• Assist the Company Manager & Assistant Company Manager in arranging and providing hospitality to the acting company and guest artistic staff. 
• Arranging travel and housing 
• Coordinate refreshments for Meet & Greets
• Organize and maintain housing kits and prepare residences for company members
• Coordinate daily shuttle schedules
• Assisting in the special needs of the company and working to welcome artists to Ithaca and the Hangar Theatre

Executive Management Internship

This position will expose early career managers to cultural management, executive leadership and mission-based decision making in the professional theatre, Successful candidates will receive a broad overview of the Hangar Theatre and how it functions as a whole. This position reports to the Managing Director.

General responsibilities: 

• Be prompt and prepared for work each day
• Become familiar with the theatre’s daily operations expense and revenue concerns, and   mission-based goals and priorities
• Participate in fund-raising events and represent the Hangar to the public, possibly through participating in curtain speeches, board meetings, and other events
• Attend leadership meetings, department head meetings, and board meetings
• Complete independent projects as assigned

Requirements:

• Extensive knowledge of theatrical production and management
• Refined standards of organization and attention to detail
• Excellent administration and communication skills Basic knowledge of accounting principles and practices
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including PowerPoint, Word, Outlook and Excel 
• Ability to take direction and work with others in a team oriented environment

Preference will be given to applicants with an undergraduate degree in business, communications or the arts. Interested applicants will need to submit references and one writing sample (no longer than two pages) in addition to the Intern Application, letter of interest and resume.

Costume Shop Apprenticeship

The apprentice learns costume construction techniques by assisting with the building, altering, painting/dyeing of costumes for all Mainstage, KIDDStuff and Wedge productions.

• Actor fittings
• Restocking of costumes
• Shopping
• Maintaining cleanliness and organization of all costume and wardrobe areas.  

The Apprentice may assist in the running of Mainstage, KIDDStuff or Wedge productions as needed. 

Design Fellows

Design Apprenticeship

Four apprentices will learn design techniques by assisting the Design Fellows with the designs for the KIDDStuff and Wedge productions.  There will be one apprentice in each of the four major design areas (costumes, lights, sound, and scenery).  Apprentices will also assist in the load-in/hang/focus as appropriate for their particular area for the Mainstage, KIDDStuff, and Wedge productions.  Apprentices will also attend production meetings as well as design meetings.

Electrics Internship

• Assist with the hanging and focusing of each Mainstage, KIDDSTUFF and Wedge production
• Dimmer checks before performances
• Troubleshooting problems
• Repairing and maintaining equipment as needed
• Constructing and wiring of any practicals 
• Prep work for changeovers
• Maintaining cleanliness and organization in all electrics areas.

Electrics Interns also program and run the lighting console, alternating between Mainstage and KIDDSTUFF technical rehearsals and performances.  Each intern will get the opportunity to serve as Assistant Master Electrician on a KIDDSTUFF or Wedge Production.

Electrics Apprenticeship

Three apprentices learn theatre electrics techniques by assisting with the hanging and focusing of each Mainstage, KIDDStuff and Wedge production.

Paint Apprenticeship

The apprentice learns scenic painting techniques by assisting with the painting of the Mainstage productions.

Production Management Apprenticeship

The apprentice will learn production management techniques including budgeting (tracking and reconciliation) and scheduling by working closely with the Production Management team. Apprentices will also attend production meetings as well as design meetings as available.

Props Internship

Props Apprenticeship

The apprentice learns stage prop techniques by assisting with the research, construction, purchasing, painting and borrowing of props for all Mainstage, KIDDStuff and Wedge productions.

Scene Shop Apprenticeship

The apprentice learns scenery construction techniques by assisting with the building, striking, and loading-in of scenery for each Mainstage, KIDDStuff and Wedge production.

Sound Apprenticeship

The apprentice learns theatre sound techniques by assisting with the hanging and patching of equipment for all Mainstage, KIDDStuff and Wedge productions.

• Sound checks before performances
• Troubleshooting problems
• Repairing and maintaining equipment as needed
• Prep work for changeovers
• Maintaining cleanliness in all sound areas
• Mixing sound playback for Wedge productions
• Functioning backstage as Mic Technicians during Mainstage or KIDDStuff musicals
• Running Mainstage or KIDDStuff productions as needed.  

Sound Apprentices also assist with Mainstage Electrics changeovers.

Stage Management Internship

Stage Management Apprenticeship

Three apprentices will learn stage management techniques by serving as assistant stage managers for Wedge productions, Production Assistants for KIDDStuff productions, and Run Crew for Mainstage productions.  Apprentices will also attend production meetings as well as design meetings as available.

Technical Direction Internship 

Knowledge of basic scenic construction techniques and AutoCad (preferred) or Vectorworks is necessary.  

The intern will get the opportunity to serve as the Technical Director on KIDDSTUFF and Wedge Productions.

Technical Direction Apprenticeship

The apprentice learns scenery construction and planning techniques by assisting the Technical Director with the building, striking, and loading-in of scenery for each Mainstage, KIDDStuff and Wedge production

General responsibilities:

• Maintaining cleanliness in all scenery areas
• Budgeting
• Researching and identifying materials and items required for the productions
• Running of Mainstage or KIDDStuff productions as needed.  

Apprentice will attend production meetings and design meetings as available.

Wardrobe Internship

Wardrobe Apprenticeship

The apprentice learns wardrobe techniques by assisting with the running of costumes for Mainstage, KIDDStuff, and Wedge productions as needed.
