Hangar Design Fellowship Program

Design Fellows & Design Apprenticeships:

Approximately 15 years ago a dream was hatched to aid in the development of the next generation of theatre designers, providing an opportunity for intensive hands-on training equivalent to that of the Summer Drama League Directors’ Project.  This program is designed to help bridge the gap between the educational and professional worlds.  Our goal became to create an experience like no other. Giving early career designers the chance to learn, grow, think, collaborate, network, design, stretch, and most importantly – FAIL.  Will every idea be a home run?  Will every method work out?  Of course not, but you’ll never know unless you try.

Thus, the Design Fellowship Program was born. Design opportunities are in the following fields: Scenery, Lighting, Sound, & Costumes.

Throughout the years the program has been manipulated, altered, changed again, overhauled, and tweaked to make the experience as positive as possible.  In 10 weeks this summer, the 4 fellows will design 8 shows (four 2nd stage experimental productions  in our ‘Wedge Series’ and four children’s theatre productions in our ‘KIDDSTUFF season’), collaborate with four Drama League Directors, mentor four Design Apprentices, and assist on the Mainstage productions.  This is Design Boot Camp!

This program will challenge you to think – creatively, quickly, and collaboratively. This program will force you out of your design comfort zone.  This program will hone your artistic voice.

Working closely with the Design Fellows, are our Design Apprentices. Four apprentices will learn design techniques by assisting the Design Fellows with the designs for the KIDDStuff and Wedge productions.  There will be one apprentice in each of the four major design areas (costumes, lights, sound, and scenery).  Apprentices will also assist in the load-in/hang/focus as appropriate for their particular area for the Mainstage, KIDDSTUFF, and Wedge productions.  Apprentices will attend production meetings, design meetings and design the final KIDDSTUFF production of the season.
